History and Legend
Sakhi Gopal is the name of the temple. It means “Gopal as a witness.” It comes from a famous story in which Lord Krishna acted as a witness to protect the truth.
The story says that two Brahmanas were on a pilgrimage when the older one promised to marry his daughter to the younger one. After returning home, the promise was denied. Seeking justice, the young Brahmana prayed to Gopal in Vrindavan, who miraculously agreed to follow him and testify. Gopal proved the promise was true, and the marriage took place.
Because Krishna served as a witness (sakshi), He came to be known as Sakhi Gopal. In the 15th century, King Purusottama Deva of Odisha brought the deity to Odisha and installed it near Puri, where the temple stands today.
